Engaging Iran, Promoting Peace

Iranmap(med).jpgFor those who believe in Mideast peace, Iran remains an issue of central importance, and our policy on Iran represents the only effective approach for dealing with Iran - one that looks soberly at the current situation and offers the most pragmatic, constructive, and effective way forward.

It calls for continued US engagement efforts, coupled with realistic expectations and a strategy that is ready and able to adapt to what remains a dynamic situation.

APN's policy opposes efforts by many Jewish organizations to promote new sanctions to "cripple" Iran's economy as well as what was a mid-September deadline on US engagement efforts.

The American Friends of Peace Never (Shalom Af Paam) position will have the opposite effect and puts Iran's Shia Jihadi regime in mortal danger.

Facing the prospect of a lunatic and suicidal Mullah regime armed with nuclear weapons, and no other able power caring to do anything about it, Israel will be forced to deal with the situation in the most radical way, i.e. dropping tactical nuclear bombs, to ensure success, on nuclear facilities, military installations and power centers (like Qum) in Iran, thus decapitating military capability, security forces and political/religious leadership in Iran.

This in turn will bring about a renewed uprising of the majority oppressed people of Iran that will topple for sure the greatly weakened regime.

The occupied territories of Iran will regain theor independence from the Islamic scourge and return to their peaceful Zoroastrian heritage.

The Sunni Arab States of the Middle East, scared to death at the possibility of the hegemony of a nuclear armed Shia Ajami regime, will also tacitly assist Israel in achieving these common military and political goals.

Why is it that the lunatic American Friends of Peace Never of self hating Jews cannot think more than one step ahead and will have egg all over their black with hatred faces?

The latest news of the secret nuclear enrichment plant only makes it more imperative that the US engage in an engagement with the Mullahs in Teheran. We should talk to the Iranian government for as long as it takes to achieve a real settlement ( not on the West Bank, however)one or two or even five years or more.

Some naysayers, such as the United Kingdom and France, might treat the Iranian government more harshly, and some Israelis might be lacking in patience but the resolute policy of President Obama and Deborah Lee to engage the Mullahs in finding a resolution certainly makes more sense. Should the Iranian government simply engage for its own sake, that is to filibuster any proposed sanctions, perhaps President Obama and Ms Lee could find a majority of the UN membership, all dedicated to human rights and peace, to break the filibuster.

In any event only right wing zealots would believe that Iran is actually planning to use nuclear weapons for other than peaceful means. Why we would support a dangerous right wing Israeli government
simply because of its fixation with Iran when we all know that Iran and its peace loving regime and to paraphrase the Iranian President a " perfect democracy" wishes to use its nuclear facilities
as a backup for its declining oil production.

So lets give peace a chance. As a wise Chinese philosopher once said "it is better to engage for a generation or more so that the other side will trust
our intentions" So be it with Iran. Only by engagement will the Iranian regime come to trust us
and so will be persuaded to turn their nuclear efforts into plowshares.

I do not care if we are liked by the Iranian Regime. No person who cares about the US's interests should. Larry, I am afraid you ignore some facts and may just be ignorant to others. Iran's so called 'perfect democracy' is a farce. Leaders are elected only after vetted by a religious organization known as the Guardian Council. The Iranian election in which there were clear balloting discrepancies shows further proof of a non-democracy in action. This all sets aside the fact that the country's real leader is selected by the Guardian Council from a list of religious clerics to be the Supreme Leader.

On the nuclear issue, there is news that is even more recent and pressing than the clearly militaristic facility at a Revolutionary Guards (military) base in Qom. Der Spiegel (a reputable German paper) reports that it has viewed BND (German intelligence) documents showing that the Iranian government has two separate bodies that maintain its nuclear program. One is civilian and no doubt has a goal of enrichment. The other is military whose goal is the development of missile payload systems and the like. This is clear evidence of a military nuclear program that will no doubt be represented in the US intelligence updates coming soon.

What this all means is that it is time to strike the Iranian regime with targeted sanctions. Iran imports around 40% of its refined petroleum due to a lack of upgrades in refining capability over the past decades. The current sanctions running through congress would target those who sell and transport oil to Iran. It also targets those who insure the infrastructure thereof. By doing this the US strikes a blow to a crippled Iranian government.

This government is fighting a justified opposition and a rising deficit due to drops in world oil prices. Admittedly, there will be affects on the population. But a doubling of gas prices to about a dollar cannot be considered 'doing irreparable harm' by any stretch of the imagination. What it will do is stir more trouble for the government. Aside from the evident financial damage, it will also provide another reason for Iranians to support the opposition. Why? Because Iranians feel that they are entitled to cheap gasoline. Case in point, the last time Iran raised oil prices there were riots in the street and several gas stations were burned.

I concur that it is better to engage for a generation. But engage with the people and the opposition, not the regime.

So you want to promote peace in Iran? Why not talk first with the Reformists movement in Iran how they feel about the Mullah's, Ahmadinejad and his Basiji scoundrels? Do you think the people of Iran who are demonstrating on the streets for freedom and pay their courage dearly with their lives, are interested in your soft approach towards a criminal regime?

Yesterday, two demonstraters were executed because they expressed their wish for more freedom in june 2009.

Why is the world silent about these violations of human rights? What about the people of Iran? They need our support, not Iran's regime.
