Peace Now activists assaulted on video

Some stunning footage just became available of a settler attacking a team of Peace Now activists who were surveying West Bank settlement construction.

The assault took place at the settlement of Dolev. The incident was captured on video and reported by Israel's Channel 2 Television, whose news team was documenting Peace Now's work, and was also assaulted.

Peace Now activists track settlement expansion because it harms Israel and the prospects for peace. Settlements burden Israel's security services, create friction between Israelis and Palestinians, drain financial resources, and undermine the two-state solution which is so critical to bringing about real and lasting peace.

The news segment above was broadcast on Channel Two's evening news broadcast Thursday. (Watch it by clicking on the play button above).

Peace Now's Hagit Ofran filed a police complaint against the assailant. An arrest was made this morning.

This settler violence is inexcusable, heart wrenching, and, unfortunately, all too common. It undermines the possibilities for stability and peace. Settlers assault our volunteers because they know that Peace Now's work has an impact. They know that Peace Now is the best resource for information about settlements and has reinforced President Obama's firm hand to bring a stop to settlements.

Our volunteers risk their lives for peace, but they cannot work alone. We need your help so they can continue their work and to also give it even greater impact. Please, take one minute out of your day to stand against violence.

First, support the critical work of Americans for Peace Now. This funding is absolutely critical.

Second, forward this to your friends and family. Let them see what is really happening on the ground in the West Bank.

We welcome your thoughts or messages of hope and peace for Israel's future.

This is some shocking and very informative footage of just how detrimental these settlements are to everyone.

This is an important document.
It is important to inform the world jewish population as well as well meaning Israelis. These settlement people and all thoses that uphold settlements need to be countered in their ideas of protecting the Jewish state of Israel. They are destroying Israel's moral dignity by denying the rights of Palestinians as the nazis did to the jews.
They should read the new book by Fred Jerome "Einstein on Israel and Zionism". Einstein clearly expresses his distress at Israel's injustice towards Palestinians, fears Israel's narrow nationalsim and regrets the loss of Jewish diginty and humanism.

Unfortunately, the people that I know who need most to see this video and others, will dismiss it as shameful anti-Jewish/Israel propaganda. I will continue to be told that I am naive and a self-hating Jew etc.. The latter doesn't bother me, but the reality of the situation in Israel pains me, as the Palestinians continue to suffer and die. "When will we/they ever learn?" Thank you Peace Now for all the dedicated work that you do!

The Peace Now Activists are truly admirable for their bravery, persistence and fearlessness. Idan Goldberger, you're doing the right thing in working for peace, don't ever forget that. That takes even more courage and sacrifice than to strap on a deadly weapon to kill and subdue.

As a Quaker, I condemn violence on all sides. The extremists who build illegal settlements on Palestinian land can be compared to the violent citizens in the US who believe attacking another country (Iraq) was a valid solution to Mid Eastern problems.

I support Peace Now, and all groups who want to bring peace and equity to th Palestinian-Isreali conflict.

Kol Hakavod to Idan and Hagit.

If I were in Israel today, I would have joined you. Indeed, this video should be shown in the USA>

Peace Now activists are mostly communist Marxists who want to see the end of a Jewish (Zionist) state. They are anarchists also who think they have to destroy the present to build a better future. Has Peace Now ever complained that after all the Jews were deported from Gaza that Hamas began firing missiles at Sderot?
These people have mental problems and enjoy defying authroity no matter how illogical. As for the guy with the injury from an Arab sniper, I'd like to know the date and place of his injury. Peace Now thinks nothing of creating phony scenarios to achieve their anarcho-communist goals against Israel. And, yes, they are exactly like those Jews who tattled to the Poles on their fellow Jews.
Ask Peace Now why they don't complain to the PA for having a law making it a death sentence to sell land to a Jew.

I was alone in a wilderness before I laarned about Peace Now. I never wanted to speak with my fellow Jews about Israel because I was so troubled by how the Palestinians were treated, and was attacked for saying anything evenly remotely neutral. Now I know that I have many fellow Jews, in America and in Israel, who share my sentiments.

Thank you, Peace Now, and especially the Peace Now activists who heroically stand up for all our humanity.

This is very disturbing - on both sides -
not just the Israeli side - read my article - or just google "wife beating"

I am begining to think that the solution has nothing to do with 2 states or 0 states or 10 states but with "requiring" women to vote "unsupervised" and without the knowledge of men - notice that in the video the only non-violent player was a woman.

I am sad to see that an IDF veteran -who has already been severely wounded in war-was attacked by another Israeli.
This video was very painful to watch.I salute the bravery of the young Israeli IDF veteran and while I pity the man who attacked him-I also hope that this attacker is placed in jail. No country can allow such conduct to go unpunished and remain democratic for long!

For job-related reasons I no longer live in Israel. I wish I could to more directly assist the work of true patriotic Zionists like Idan and Hagit. My monetary contributions to Shalom Achshav are important, I know, but seem feeble compared to the work of these brave people. Kol hakavod lachem, Idan v'Hagit!

please stay strong guys! If I was in the area I would volunteer and help, but I have obligations that prevent me from simply dedicating myself to this cause. I will continue to exerscise what power I can - namely through donations.

Peace upon you all!

Thank you for the courageous work you are doing. Chuck

If people came to my yard in a provocative, confrontive manner, over and over, I might be sorely tempted to throw something at them in anger and frustration, too. Peace Now "activists" seem to me to be a few misguided angry people.

Too bad the press and peace now chose to perpetuate hatred by highlighting one single man who doesnt even live there, who is in charge of security - rather than the second man, a resident of the jewish community who spoke elegantly and peacefully - and who represents his fellow residents.
The story isnt attractive without blood, or in this case rocks, but that's the true version - the Jewish residents are overall extremely warm and give little opportunity to honestly vilify their actions; beyond a few hoodlums and outsiders, found in Peace Now and every group as well.

For those of you, like Shmuel, who are in Israel and want to volunteer, get in touch with lee [at] peacenow.org.il.

A security guard attacking Jews? Whoa! That reminds me of Europe 60+ years ago.

Mr. Kaplan demonstrates that the lessons of Goebbels were not lost on the Jewish right. He refers to anarcho-communists the way Goebbels and the Nazis referred to Jewish Bolshevik-Plutocrats. The Nazis thought that all that mattered was that they were Jewish. Kaplan thinks that all that matters is that they are on the Left.

Why when a Palestinian throws rocks or stones at a civilian vehicle it is considered terrorism but when a settler does it it is merely defense of Eretz Israel?

People of Israel,

Please, if you feel underinformed about the settlers, watch this documentary online for free.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/israel/view/

Its by the American documentary program 'Frontline' and is very powerful and professionally made. Definitely worth it.

Zionism is Terrorism.

I hope those who simply wish to call people names, denounce Israel, insult the Jewish faith and denounce Peace now realize how much they have in common,in a word -hatred.The other Mr.Kaplan(Michael)

The settlers need to be left to do the work that God has tasked them with. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to reexamine their logic. The settlers are the tip of the spear, the front line of defense to a free Israel. They deserve respect and support.

Peace Now should be just as vigilant when Palestinians build illegal homes within Israel as they are in the West Bank when Jews build new homes there. I just returned from Israel and saw many illegal apartments built in Nazareth and in the Galillee without permits or permission. Nary a peep from Peace Now.

Also, I would like to hear from Peace Now when the Palestinian Authority threaten any Palestinians who sell land to Jews with death. Again, nary a peep.

If Peace Now really wants to work for peace, its members need to look at legitmate inequities on both sides.

I think that the settlement enterprise which at one time must have seemed to be so promising for increasing the Jewish population of Israel, is in the process of turning around and biting the hands that fed it.
These individuals have not been educated in international law ( perhaps have even been encouraged to break that law) and have therefore never come to understand that 'their' homes on occupied Palestinian land can never legally be theirs.
What an ugly hornets' nest Israel, the U.S., and other enablers have created at the expense of the people who have been convinced that their settlements are justified and of those on whose land those criminal edifices have been erected.

Welldone!!

That's what should be done to all Soney Israel like these Shalom Ahshav who bring only wars to the middle east.

Peace Now got what they were looking to get, footage showing the "settlers" as being irrational and out of control. Let them also go interview and film the left wing groups as the demonstrate and attack, physically as well as verbally, the government and representatives of Israel. Film the illegal building by Arabs and interview the builders with the same passion that you use when you go after those you oppose and then air all of the footage and not just the parts that validate your ideology.

I'm what would most people reading this would call right wing. I commend Peace Now for wanting the world to know the true situation, but what troubles me is that there is no Palestinian equivalent to Peace Now. As commenters 21 and 24 say, Shalom Achshav (Peace Now) only seem to care to monitor anything done wrong by the Israeli side. Call me stupid, but I think stockpiling weapons, as done by Hamas (and not monitored by Peace Now) is a hell of a lot more dangerous to peace as is a few homes being built.

I hope that some day there will be Palestinian human rights groups that will be able to operate freely and will be able to criticize their government as much as Peace Now criticizes theirs'. Until that day happens, however, I fear that Peace Now's efforts will be in vain. What this comes down to is that Israel doesn't have a viable peace partner. Whatever Israel or settlers do is really irrelevant.
