APN's daily news review from Israel
Monday August 29, 2016

Quote of the day:
“Routine. There is no contradiction between “nobody was hurt” and ‘the terrorist was killed.’ Only Jews can be hurt. An update followed: ‘The Kfir squad commander, who saw the terrorist throw a firebomb at an IDF pillbox in Silwad, shot and killed him. Nobody was hurt.’ Now the shooting had turned into ‘a firebomb.’ A short time later, it was reported: ‘Apparently, he was mentally unstable. A search on his body resulted with no findings.’ In other words, murder.
--Haaretz’s Gideon Levy writes how Israeli media accepts IDF reports as fact and how Israelis view the killing of a Palestinian within the conflict.

Commentary/Analysis:
In Israel, a Dead Arab Evokes Just One Big Yawn (Gideon Levy, Haaretz+) No one bats an eye over Friday's killing of an innocent man by an Israeli soldier. It's not terror, or apartheid, or racism or dehumanization. It's only killing a subhuman.
The Protective Wall of Messianic Judaism Destroying Israel (Roni Schocken, Haaretz+) The more Israel strengthens its democratic nature, its legitimacy will increase. But meanwhile, Israel is marching in the opposite direction.
Zionism Today Is an Illusion (Rogel Alpher, Haaretz+) Anyone ever expecting Israel to end the occupation, either voluntarily or via international pressure, needs to think again. We are on course to become a binational state, and Jews should plan accordingly.
Not in our favor: if Trump gets elected will harm Israel's image (Uri Savir, Maariv) The fact the businessman is that clearly pro-Israeli will hurt us. If he is elected president, support for Israel becomes identified with him and many countries will keep their distance from us.
Miri Regev’s Modesty Patrol Is Israel's Burkini Ban (Haaretz Editorial) The culture minister comes to defense of the sensibilities of 'the entire public' on the basis of what the ministry deemed a mishap at an event the ministry itself produced – a singer in a bikini top.
Why yes to burkini: banning wearing it is another way to enslave women (Dr. Revital Amiran, Maariv) Precisely in the name of liberalism, French citizens cannot but respect the decision of women to wear a burkini. If they want to eradicate terrorism, the right way is to promote dialogue with moderate religious leaders.
Israel's Radical Left Committed Suicide, and Now the Right Will Kill Us All (Ari Shavit, Haaretz+) With the left's approach so unilateral, ahistoric and disconnected from reality, it will never be possible to effect political change in Israel.
Leaving Israel Only Helps Those Dreaming of a Liberal-free Israel (Asaf Ronel, Haaretz+) The only way to contribute politically to Israel is to stay here, without surrendering to the demands of the purity of Jewish blood and to do the best we can to bring about a better future.

As Turkey Fights the Kurds, ISIS Betrays the Limits of Its Power (Zvi Bar'el, Haaretz+) The Islamic State is currently being defeated by modest forces, showing the errors made by the West, Russia and even Iran when in 2014 they didn’t launch a major offensive.
