A new Iran sanctions resolution, H. Con. Res. 362, is currently circulating in the House. Please contact your Representative and urge him or her to oppose passage of this resolution.

Iran's determination to press ahead with its nuclear program poses serious concerns for both the US and Israel, and targeted economic sanctions can be a valuable tool to put pressure on Iran to change its policies.

However, sanctions alone cannot replace diplomacy as a means of resolving differences between nations. Addressing the challenge of Iran requires a comprehensive strategy - a combination of sanctions and diplomacy, carrots and sticks - and strong U.S. participation and leadership. Unfortunately, H. Con. Res. 362 perpetuates and escalates the existing sticks-only approach.

Moreover, ambiguity in the text of H. Con. Res. 362 has led some to see it as de facto approval for a land, air or sea blockade of Iran, any of which could be considered an act of war. Even if this was not the intent of the drafters, H. Con. Res. 362 risks sending a message that Congress supports an increasingly belligerent, confrontational policy on Iran. Such a message will only strengthen hardliners in Iran and risks emboldening the reckless voices in the U.S. government who continue to push for a military offensive against Iran before the end of the year.

It is time for Congress to recognize that the best interests of both the U.S. and Israel demand direct, sustained, and unconditional U.S.-led diplomacy and engagement with Iran. Please contact your Representative and ask him or her to demand such a policy, and to reject the counterproductive approach to Iran embodied in H. Con. Res. 362.

Please write your Representative. Urge him or her to oppose this resolution and to press their leadership to keep it from coming to a vote.

Please also call your Representative. Make your voice heard as part of a multi-organization grassroots call-in day opposing this resolution.
