PAST ACTION - Tell Congress: Oppose Annexation!

Update: this action, now closed, ran in June 2020.

On June 19, Americans for Peace Now joined with nine other organizations in a Day of Action to advance resolutions in the Senate and in the House of Representatives that oppose annexation of the West Bank by Israel and support the two-state solution. The need for action remains.

Please take part with us and our fellow organizations!

Our coalition (APN, Ameinu, Hashomer Hatzair, J Street, Jewish Labor Committee, National Council of Jewish Women, New Israel Fund, Partners for Progressive Israel, Reconstructing Judaism, and T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights) sent a letter to leaders in the House of Representatives urging them to bring to the House floor a H. Res. 326, a resolution that will put on record members of the House of Representatives as endorsing the two-state solution and repudiating Israeli annexation of the West Bank or parts of it. Over half of the House Democratic Caucus have already signed on as co-sponsors. It’s time that our representatives have an opportunity to debate and vote on this resolution.

KEEP YOUR PLAN TO YOURSELF!

Jared Kushner, appointed by his father-in-law President Donald Trump to come up with what Trump called “the Ultimate Deal” for Israeli-Palestinian peace, has signaled that his “peace plan” does not aim to achieve a two-state solution. Kushner recently indicated that because past attempts to achieve a two-state solution failed, his plan focuses on “new and different ways to reach peace.” Kushner’s colleague, Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, said the plan is an effort to “think outside the box.”

SIGN THE PETITION: TELL JARED NO!

A peace initiative that falls short of a two-state solution is not thinking outside the box. Rather, it is boxing Israelis and Palestinians into a state of endless conflict. It is a plan that condemns Israel to becoming either a non-democratic apartheid-like state or a binational state that will lose its character as the homeland of the Jewish people. A plan like this is neither pro-peace nor pro-Israel. Instead of creating a political horizon for Israelis and Palestinians, it blocks realization of Palestinian aspirations for self-determination in a sovereign state.

PAST ACTION: Tell Congress to Halt the Push to War Against Iran

Update: this action, now closed, ran in May 2019.

The Trump administration, at the direction of National Security Advisor John Bolton, is ramping up its provocations against Iran and moving the United States perilously close to an unnecessary war. This crescendo comes one year after Trump’s decision to put the US in violation of the Iran nuclear deal.

Tell Congress to take a stand against an unauthorized war of choice against Iran.

Update: this action, now closed, ran in May 2019.

A new resolution introduced in the House of Representatives makes clear that only a two-state solution can ensure Israel’s future as a liberal democracy and national home for the Jewish people, while also fulfilling Palestinian national aspirations.

Ask your representative to co-sponsor this measure affirming the need for a two-state solution.

A CALL TO ACTION - Post-Israeli Election Message from APN Chair Jim Klutznick

Dear Friend,

Israeli elections are over. Any hopes that we may have had for electoral change that would garner pro-peace leadership are dashed.

Temporarily.

Facing three indictments, Benjamin Netanyahu may soon leave the political scene.

Meanwhile, we have a reinvigorated Netanyahu, backed by his political twin Donald Trump, pushed hard by his extreme right-wing coalition partners to deliver his campaign promise of West Bank annexation.

Let’s not mince words, my friends: With Trump’s blessing, Netanyahu is on his way to officially, legally, establish an apartheid regime in the West Bank, and make it even harder for future Israeli leaders to make peace. Let’s be clear: Yesterday’s elections have put Netanyahu and his allies on a faster, surer track to destroy Israel’s democracy and to further crush its ethos of equality, justice, and tolerance.

For us, progressive Americans who care about Israel, today is a call to action. Today, we are redoubling our commitment to the cause of a democratic Israel that lives in peace and security with its neighbors and embodies the values we so strongly believe in.

PAST ACTION - Tell AIPAC: Condemn and Disinvite Netanyahu

Update: this action, now closed, ran in February 2019.

Benjamin Netanyahu has forged an alliance with racists. AIPAC should condemn him, not make him a featured speaker at its policy conference.

PAST ACTION: Tell Your Senators to Oppose the Combating BDS Act

Update: this action, now closed, ran in January 2019.

In the midst of the longest government shutdown in US history, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has prioritized – and tried repeatedly to advance – a bill which attempts to distract from the shutdown by playing political football with Israel-related legislation.

The bill, S.1, combines four pieces of Middle East-related legislation, including the highly problematic Combating BDS Act (CBA). Its purpose of the CBA is to encourage state and local governments to adopt legislation which penalizes companies and individual contractors that choose to boycott Israel and/or Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The ACLU has filed suits against this legislation in a number of states, resulting (so far) in injunctions issued by two federal district courts, which ruled that these state laws violate the constitutionally protected right to boycott.

The legislation also conflates “Israel and Israeli-controlled territories,” attempting to blur the distinction between the two, legitimating Israeli settlements in the West Bank and securing them against protests.

So far, Senator McConnell has attempted to advance S.1 three times. Undeterred by defeat, he has entered a motion for a fourth vote. As this fight continues, let’s show the legislators who voted against advancing S.1 that they have our support.

Take action to thank your senators if they voted against advancing S.1 and the Combating BDS Act. And if your senators registered a pro-settlements/anti-free speech vote, take them to task for it.
