News Summary:
The military judge in the case of the ‘Shooting Soldier from Hebron’ surprised when he released the soldier to ‘open detention’ on a military base. The prosecution surprised when it dropped the charges from murder to manslaughter and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu surprised when he called the parents of the Shooting Soldier and expressed sympathy for their plight. Haaretz+ revealed that IDF protocol was to give neutralized assailants medical care and not wait for sappers. The autopsy of the killed Palestinian, Abd al-Fattah Yusri al-Sharif, was delayed until Sunday due to disagreements between the IDF and the Palestinian’s family over who will perform the autopsy. The High Court ruled that Israel will perform the autopsy and a Palestinian coroner may observe, but not participate, as the family had requested. Moreover, he may ask for certain procedures to be done, but the Israeli coroner will decide whether to do them or not. The autopsy could answer key questions over Al-Sharif's death, whether it was caused by the first shot that immobilized him or by the 'Shooting Soldier.' (Maariv)
The Attorney General has approved opening a criminal investigation into suspicions against Interior Minister Arieh Deri, who sat in jail for corruption years ago, over property he and his family own. Deri said he has done no wrong and will completely cooperate.
The rabbinate lost its monopoly on conversions. The High Court ruled that the Law of Return requires that Israel recognize Jewish conversions performed in Orthodox communities that are not within the state conversion framework.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told Israeli journalist Ilana Dayan that he was working to stop Palestinian knife attacks against Israelis and that he had offered to meet Netanyahu to rekindle peace efforts.
