APN's daily news review from Israel
Friday June 10, 2016
Quote of the day:
“They will put up fences, demolish homes, and make life harder [for Palestinians]. These solutions cause
hatred and despair. We voted for you so that you would stop the cycle of bloodshed. For 49 years you have been
trying to solve this using tactical methods and you aren’t succeeding.”

News Summary:
Friday’s Hebrew papers told the stories behind the headlines of the attack in Tel-Aviv in which two young Palestinians murdered four Israeli civilians and the Israeli commentators examined what were the causes and what should happen now – with very different conclusions.
The most extraordinary story was that a Tel-Aviv cop invited one of the two attackers into his own home, thinking he was a scared Israeli fleeing the scene, and left him with his family to go and catch the attackers. Only after the policeman saw that the other Palestinian attacker was wearing an identical suit, did he understand that the similarly dressed man in his own home was the other attacker. He ran home thinking his family had been murdered as well, but found him looking frightened, drinking water, and mumbling, Yedioth reported. The policeman pinned him down and handcuffed him until police forces came to detain him. Israel Hayom called it ‘unimaginable good fortune.’ The policeman’s wife said afterward that the young man sat on the floor shaking and looking terrified and that it appeared he didn’t have the power to get up. He didn’t speak, probably in order not to give away his accent.
**With the exception of Israel Hayom, whose main Op-Ed, by Haim Shine, declared “It wasn’t because of the ‘occupation,’” the Israeli papers were introspective about the attack, much more so than usual. On its front page Yedioth gave the most space to an Op-Ed by the father of one of the four murdered Israelis, who said exactly the opposite of Shine: Collective punishment against the Palestinians has not worked and Israel needs to find diplomatic solutions. All three analyses on Maariv’s front pages said the same.
And the Haaretz Editorial declared that the “Only Solution to Palestinian Terrorism Is the End of the Occupation.”
The day after the attack, it was almost business as usual at the Sarona entertainment area, the papers reported. (Maariv) Many came from distant places to show solidarity.
The US urged Israel not to punish innocent Palestinians for the attack. Israel has sealed off Gaza and the West Bank until Sunday. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he “rejects violence against civilians.” [Note: That does not include violence against Israeli security forces. - OH] Abbas added that “Achieving a just peace and creating a positive atmosphere will contribute to removing the reasons behind tension and violence in the area.” And Tel-Aviv’s mayor Ron Huldai lamented the lack of 'courageous' Israeli leadership to end the occupation. “You can’t hold people in a situation of occupation and hope they’ll reach the conclusion everything is all right,” he said. A Palestinian poll revealed a decrease in support for stabbing attacks and an armed intifada.
