“Netanyahu won this ego war, at least in the short term. Israel’s free press, his bête noire, suffered a
harsh blow…Bibi (“in the end, I get what I want”) proved that he hasn’t lost his touch.”
--Haaretz political analyst Yossi Verter looks at the political ‘compromise’ between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon.

News Summary:
After weeks of disagreement and threats of early elections, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon agreed to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s demand to essentially ‘kill’ the independent news program of the yet-to-be-launched Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation in exchange for not going to elections making the top story in today’s Hebrew newspapers. Also making big news, the security cabinet unanimously approved the establishment of a new settlement – the first in 20 years - for the evicted residents of the Amona outpost, after which Netanyahu said that despite the fact that Israel and the US have yet to reach any understandings on settlement construction, he has ‘decided to respond to U.S. President Donald Trump's reservations regarding the settlements by unilaterally adopting a policy of restrained construction that will limit building outside existing settlement blocks, in addition to approving 2,000 of new settlement housing units,
Not making big news was that the Arab League summit concluded with the 'Amman Declaration' in which all the member states of the Arab world declared they still stand behind the 2002 Arab peace initiative, by which they offer Israel normalized diplomatic ties if it withdraws from territories it seized in the Six-Day War in 1967.
