APN's daily news review from Israel

Quote of the day:
"Contrary to many estimates, including those written in this column, Trump eventually decided
to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem at everyone's expense. He changed the paradigm and did not just
think out of the box, but smashed the box into pieces and is now trying to put together a new box. We
must pray that he succeeds, because we are the ones who are living in this broken box."

News Summary:
At Davos, US President Donald Trump made two significant statements, across Israel, heavy rains once again caused floods across the country and in the Carmel, researchers found the oldest human fossil outside Africa making top stories in the Hebrew newspapers along with more stories on the issue of the deportation of African refugees and the cultural war between the left-wing artists and the right-wing government.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said “We took (Jerusalem) off the table. We don’t have to talk about it anymore” and then turning to Netanyahu, said, "You win one point, and you’ll give up some points later in the negotiation, if it ever takes place. I don’t know that it ever will take place." He thereby contradicted earlier US statements that just because Trump declared to recognize the Jerusalem as Israel's capital does not mean that it can’t also be negotiated as the capital of Palestine.
Prior to that announcement, Trump made another declaration, worrisome to many, including some Israelis, that the US would pull its humanitarian aid to the Palestinians if they don’t return to the negotiating table. “They disrespected us a week ago by not allowing our great vice president to see them, and we give them hundreds of millions of dollars in aid and support, tremendous numbers, numbers that nobody understands. That money is on the table. That money is not going to them unless they sit down and negotiate peace,” he said.
Reacting to Trump’s statements, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly said: “If Jerusalem is off the negotiating table then the US no longer has a seat at that table.”
Netanyahu said that in their meeting together, Trump also expressed “extremely strong support” for Israel's efforts against Iran. Netanyahu also proposed a 'new model' for peace, which was not a two-state solution, but rather would take over all security control the Palestinians have over themselves and allow them to govern themselves. He did not give details.
