New from FMEP:

  • FMEP webinar 5/12/22: The Weaponization of Israel/Palestine in US Elections Campaigns, ft. Rania Batrice (Organizer, communications and legislative strategist, mediator, and advisor to elected officials, candidates, and non-profits both domestic and around the globe) & Peter Beinart (Newmark J-School and CUNY Graduate Center; editor-at-large for Jewish Currents, MSNBC political commentator, and fellow at the FMEP) in conversation with Lara Friedman (FMEP).

Note: In the FMEP webinar on linked above, Lara Friedman opened with this statement:

“I want to take a moment to acknowledge that Palestinians around the world are in mourning today. Yesterday Shireen Abu Akleh was killed while doing her job, reporting the news from the West Bank, by what multiple eyewitnesses have attested unequivocally was an intentional shot by an IDF soldier. Sherene was one of Palestine’s greatest reporters. She dedicated herself to journalism in order to tell Palestinians’ stories and raise their voices through her work at Al Jazeera. She appeared in Palestinian homes and homes across the Arabic speaking world. And here I want to quote a friend of ours, writer and analyst Tariq Baconi, who wrote Sherene was a “brilliant woman who reported truth to power. She was a model journalist for a whole generation of Palestinians, particularly those of us who grew up in exile, unable to return.” Speaking as someone who’s followed Israel/Palestine issues for years, speaking as the foundation, we are familiar with the pattern of the Israeli Government and Israeli military, engaging in denial, deflection, gaslighting, blaming Palestinians for their own deaths, like the Israeli government official who yesterday described Palestinian journalists as being “armed with cameras,”  implying, it sounded like. the Palestinian journalism is a form of terrorism, and Palestinian journalists are by extension legitimate targets. We remember, we are watching, we are documenting, and we will continue to use our platform to elevate and center Palestinian voices speaking about the myriad forms of violence that Palestinian suffer under Israeli apartheid. And today especially we want to tell our Palestinian partners, friends, and audience that we share in your sorrow and we stand with you in demanding justice.”

LETTERS

(DEFENDING REP. LEVIN) Members/former members LTE in the Forward: On 5/11/22, the Forward published a Letter to the Editor signed by 11 current and former members of the House and Senate defending Rep. Levin (D-MI) against recent attacks over Israel-related issues. The letter, headlined, “Members of Congress, including those AIPAC-allied, condemn group’s comments about Rep. Andy Levin” includes a link a 1/30/22 article, Former AIPAC president calls Jewish rep Andy Levin the ‘most corrosive’ on Israel, but just as easily could have linked to headlines this week, like this one in the Jewish Insider – Former ADL chief Foxman endorses Stevens in Michigan, says Levin ‘leaves a lot to be desired’ on Israel, antisemitism. The signers note: It is fair to disagree on and debate policy approaches. But it is out of bounds to malign the only Jewish candidate in this race by impugning Andy’s love for the State of Israel or his community bona fides, which run strong and run deep…As current and former members, we also understand the tremendous courage it takes to stake out a principled position like this. Even more, we understand the fortitude it takes to stick by it in the face of outrageous personal attacks for the sole, cynical aim of dividing the Jewish community. They are taking a page right out of the playbook of those who have sought, unsuccessfully, to drive a wedge between Jews and the Democratic Party. We call on others who share Andy’s and our commitment to Israel’s survival and security as a Jewish and democratic country to reject these divisive and counterproductive attacks on Andy.” The letter was signed by: Former U.S. Senator Al Franken; Former U.S. Representatives Barney Frank, Sam Gejdenson, Paul Hodes, and Mel Levine; current Reps. Cohen (D-TN), Jacobs (D-CA), Lowenthal (D-CA), Nadler (D-NY), Raskin (D-MD) and Yarmuth (D-KY). Also see: Levin (D-MI-9) 05/11/2022: Tweet – “I believe we can work together to create peace and unity abroad — but the recent attacks on my record and on me are disheartening. I thank all former and current members of Congress for signing onto this open letter and speaking to my commitment to Israel. Letter | Members of Congress, including those AIPAC-allied, condemn group’s comments about Rep. Andy Levin

(TARGETING VOA) Perry letter to HFAC leaders: On 5/10/22, Perry (R-PA) sent a letter to the Chair and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, to request the Committee formally subpoena the CEO of USAGM [United States Agency for Global Media] and schedule an oversight hearing no later than Thursday July 14, 2022.”  The letter is a follow-up to a Perry-led letter sent back in March 2022 (covered in the 4/1/22 issue of the Round-Up) alleging primarily that the VOA violated its obligation to be non-partisan, but also implying that its Iran coverage is biased. She said they were a good model that must be developed further.”  Note: “Joint industrial zones” is a euphemism/deceptive label for settlement industrial zones over which Israeli authorities have full control/authority, and in which these authorities permit Palestinians to operate/work, to varying degrees ]

Media & Members re: Elections

Michigan

Jewish Insider 5/12/22: Daily Kickoff email [once again] targeting Andy Levin [Rep. Andy Levin (D-MI) announced yesterday that he is donating the funds he has received from corporate and industry PACs that have also donated to Republicans who voted against certifying the 2020 election results to an abortion rights group, framing the move as a rejection of corporate PAC funding, a day after Jewish Insider revealed he had taken $55,000 from PACs that had also donated to Republicans who voted against certifying President Joe Biden’s election. Levin had criticized AIPAC, which is backing his primary opponent Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), and its super PAC for their involvement in Democratic primary races in light of AIPAC’s endorsement of Republicans who voted against election certification. AIPAC accused Levin of ‘hypocrisy and double standards’ for ‘uniquely singl[ing] out America’s pro-Israel PAC for criticism.’ Levin also called on Stevens to reject money from corporate PACs and AIPAC’s PAC. Stevens campaign spokesperson Larkin Parker responded, ‘Let’s be very clear, this swift departure on the part of Mr. Levin is solely because his hypocrisy was called out,’ and went on to criticize Levin for not running in the neighboring 10th Congressional District “[w]ith Roe on the chopping block.” Parker added, ‘The congresswoman’s votes aren’t for sale to anyone — her voting record shows that. She’s absolutely clear about who she fights for and why she ran for Congress.’”]

Jewish Insider 5/10/22: Former ADL chief Foxman endorses Stevens in Michigan, says Levin ‘leaves a lot to be desired’ on Israel, antisemitism

Jewish Insider 5/10/22: While criticizing Stevens and AIPAC, Levin took $55,500 from PACs supporting GOP non-certifiers [“Each of the groups that has donated to Levin, as well as numerous other corporate PACs and industry groups supporting election deniers, has also funneled funds to Stevens’ campaign. Stevens has taken at least $151,000 from groups on the CREW lists as of the end of 2021. The corporate and industry PAC donations to Levin are also significantly less than the funding that AIPAC has contributed toward Stevens — it has funneled more than $300,000 to Stevens’ campaign via its PAC and given $2,900 from its own coffers — or the millions in outside spending in other races to which Levin had expressed his objection.]

The Forward 5/8/22: He was the head of Christians United for Israel. Now he’s running as a [Republican] Jewish candidate for Congress [“Brog said that he brings a lifetime of dedication and a depth of knowledge to lead on pro-Israel causes. ‘I don’t just want to be a friend of Israel,’ he said. ‘I want to be a leader on Israel and a champion of Israel.’ He said both parties lack people who understand the issues sufficiently and have the ability to get into the details of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so that they can push back against anti-Israel statements and organize their caucuses to defend Israel when needed. ‘We have to be very quick to reach out and broaden our coalition to all people of goodwill who love Israel and hate antisemitism,’ he said. He eyes Ritchie Torres, a first-term progressive congressman from New York who has become a leading voice on Israel, as a potential friend in Congress.’”]

Pennsylvania

WESA 5/13/22: As Sanders visits, progressives and political establishment clash in 12th Congressional District [“Sanders said Lee would be his ally on a number of crucial issues: raising the minimum wage for workers, raising taxes on the wealthy, making college tuition-free, and dislodging the fossil-fuel industry with renewable energy. And he added that he was ‘here for another reason’ — to push back on a multimillion-dollar ad campaign targeting Lee. The campaign is financed largely by United Democracy Project, which is tied to an advocacy group with a hawkish position on supporting Israel. So far, the so-called ‘super PAC’ reports spending $2.4 million on the race.”]

The Nation 5/13/22: A super PAC is smearing Lee as a threat to the Democratic Party as she campaigns to become the first Black woman to represent Pennsylvania in Congress. [“the United Democracy Project, which the American Israel Public Affairs Committee launched last December, is making a major play in the Democratic primary in western Pennsylvania’s 12th district. As of May 12, the group had spent $1,816,413 to attack Lee and another $537,285 to prop up her leading rival in the primary, Steve Irwin, according to the money-in-politics tracking group Open Secrets

Mehdi Hassan Show 5/11: Tweet – “AIPAC is funding high-dollar ads opposing PA state lawmaker @SummerForPA & her run for Congress. @mehdirhasan asks, why would the pro-Israel lobby view a lone progressive woman of color as a bigger threat to its interests than 37 GOPers who sided against democracy?

Jewish Insider 5/9/22: Israel is the only Middle East country the U.S. can fully trust, candidate Wesley Hunt tells AIPAC [“’We’re friendly with everyone — I get it, I understand that — but that Judeo background that this country was founded upon is the only one in that region… And we have enemies, actually all over that region, particularly Iran. And let’s be honest, most of the 9/11 attackers were born in Saudi Arabia. Osama bin Laden was from Riyadh. And so I learned a lot about what our interests need to be and who we need to be in the business of supporting for the future, because that’s our one true ally in the region…I love the idea of a country that’s willing to defend herself, defend her values — and surrounded by enem[ies] and water. And nevertheless, it’s a blessed land, you are a blessed people. And I admire that so much… think that’s exactly what this country wants to embody is that kind of ethos.’ The congressional hopeful lists “stand[ing] with Israel” as one of his policy priorities on his website, adding, ‘I am committed to supporting our strongest ally and oldest friend in the Middle East.’ He said he plans to work in Congress on ‘finding substantive ways to actually help’ AIPAC on issues like halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions…”]

New York

Jewish Insider 5/10/22: Nassau Republicans are all in on Anthony D’Esposito – The GOP has coalesced around the former NYPD cop as the party’s candidate to flip Kathleen Rice’s congressional seat [“D’Esposito boasted of strong relationships with the local Jewish community and a strong record on Israel, including opposition to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in local government. ‘We were, if not the first, one of the first municipalities to draft anti-BDS laws,’ he said.”]

California

Jewish Insider 5/11/22: Sydney Kamlager wants to speak ‘truth to toxicity’ in Washington [“…She hopes to see a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the U.S. as an ‘actively engaged ally’ in those conversations. But, she added, ‘at the end of the day, the agreement must be between Israel and the Palestinians. I think self-determination is incredibly important.’ It’s her support for a two-state solution, she said, that colors her opposition to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. ‘I don’t think it does anything to move the needle forward towards a two-state solution, and I don’t think it does anything to advance the continued security of Israel,’ said Kamlager.”]

Jewish Insider 5/13/22: Cawthorn suggests cutting all foreign aid [“The extreme proposal — in keeping with an inflammatory social media presence he has cultivated throughout his first term in Congress — raised questions over Cawthorn’s support for continued security assistance to Israel, which he has previously endorsed. Hours later, at least one of his opponents in next Tuesday’s primary…had pounced on the comments. ‘At my core, I’m a fighter. I spent my entire career helping America be the world leader & I want to continue this work in the U.S. House of Representatives,’ Rod Honeycutt, a retired Army colonel, shot back in a social media statement. ‘I will never deny foreign aid to @Israel.’”]

Axios 5/12/22: Durham Democrats duke it out ahead of May 17 primary [“…they differ in one issue that’s come to the forefront in this race: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Foushee’s campaign manager told The Assembly that she supports a two-state solution in the Middle East and believes ‘Israel is a critically important strategic ally.’ Allam, who is Muslim, has previously criticized Israel’s treatment of Palestine and military aid the U.S. gives Israel. Why it matters: Foushee’s stance on the conflict is one reason key Democrats and donors in North Carolina and nationally are supporting her.”]
