The tension over whether the ceasefire would be extended or the rocket fire would renew was the big story in Hebrew
newspapers today. The papers reported that the Cairo talks between the Palestinians and Israel were stalled. Israel refused to agree to Hamas'
demands. Yedioth and Ynet listed Hamas' demands. Hamas warned that without an end to the blockade
over Gaza it would renew fire and Israel warned back that it would respond with heavy
fire. [UPDATE: And, indeed, that is what happened this morning, when militants
shot rockets into Israel and Israel fired near a mosque in Gaza killing a boy. - OH] Interestingly,
Maariv reported that Israeli officials were unfazed by the Hamas threats, believing that Hamas would not renew
fire. "They have too much to lose," an Israeli official told Maariv. "It's a negotiation
tactic." The papers also noted that US President Barack Obama said, "Gaza cannot remain closed forever."
Yedioth's Shimon Shiffer wrote that the "chances to achieve a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas this weekend are greater than the likelihood of bringing an end to the battles that broke out between the decision-makers of our political and security echelons." Israeli ministers are angry that a confidential presentation that senior IDF officers shared with cabinet ministers, which described what great losses Israel would suffer if it conquered Gaza, was leaked to the media. It was believed that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu leaked it. The ministers are also angry that the IDF did not offer other options 'that showed initiative and thinking out of the box.' The ministers believe that the leak was meant to scare the public into opposing conquering Gaza and to embarrass the ministers who suggested it, i.e. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Economy Minister Naftali Bennett.
**Relations between Jews and Arabs in Israel have become strained since the Gaza war began, with the allegiance of Israeli Arabs has been called into question by some Jewish Israelis. Haaretz+ reported that Arab businesses were hit hardest. Yedioth's Jerusalem supplement cover story was about the Arab Israeli surgeon, Prof. Ahmed Eid, who saved the life of the soldier who was shot and seriously wounded this week by someone on a motorcycle and the soldier's mother, Miri Schwartz, who said, "He gave me back my son." Yedioth's entertainment supplement interviewed famous Arab Israeli sports newscaster, Zuheir Ba'aloul, who said he is appalled by the racism and fearful of an Arab Israeli uprising. "The calls for revenge on Arabs is anti-Semitism like what the Jews experienced in Europe. How is it possible to make such criminal incitement against a sector of society that is silent does not incite?"
