News Summary:

Rioting in Jerusalem and rocket-fire from the Gaza Strip dominated weekend news coverage in the Israeli press. At the start of the Jewish Sabbath, a Kassam rocket hit Sderot while another rocket meant to hit Ashkelon was intercepted by the Iron Dome Defense System. Yedioth’s Yossi Yehoshua commented that it was puzzling not to place an Iron Dome battery near Sderot. Ma’ariv’s Yossi Melman remarked Hamas’s control over Gaza has weakened and that the rocket fire likely came from Salafist organizations, which are multiplying in the Gaza Strip.

PM Netanyahu reiterated that Palestinians and the Muslim Brotherhood are to blame for incitement and causing the violence on the Temple Mount. At a security meeting today, the police will propose to alter the rules of engagement allowing them to use live fire.

Five Arab members of Knesset from the Joint List will travel to Jordon today and visit King Abdullah. These discussions will focus on tensions surrounding the Temple Mount and “the change in the status quo in the el-Aksa Mosque compound.”

In other news, an Arab-Israeli woman was arrested in Turkey on suspicion of trying to join ISIS.

Eran Malka, a former senior officer in a national corruption unit, was sentenced to 8 years in prison for corruption and is being allowed to keep his pension.

Yair Lapid, Yesh Atid party chair, today said that Israel should accept the Arab Peace Initiative as the basis for negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians and the greater Arab world. Lapid admitted the plan is not perfect but should serve as a basis for a framework.
