News Summary:
Four more Palestinians made stabbing attacks against Jewish Israelis, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu calls for a unity government and to take extreme measures against the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel “for setting things alight with its false claims about our policies at the Temple Mount and changing the status quo” and citizens begin to arm themselves making top stories in the Friday Hebrew newspapers.
Eight Israelis were wounded, two of them seriously, in four different stabbing attacks around the country Thursday. Of the four terrorists, one was shot to death, two were arrested and the fourth escaped, wrote Haaretz. Since last week's shooting murder of a Jewish couple in the West Bank, fifteen Israelis have been injured by Palestinians in seven separate stabbing attacks, and six Palestinians have been shot dead by Israeli forces, three of which were killed after alleged stabbings, while three others were shot dead during clashes. (Haaretz began posting a daily update of security incidents – a sign that it doesn’t expect this to end anytime soon. – OH)
Elsewhere, a young Palestinian was killed in heavy clashes in Shuafat refugee camp in E. Jerusalem, as clashes spread across the West Bank. According to Palestinian sources, 150 Palestinians have been wounded by live Israeli weapons fire and 360 others being injured by rubber-coated bullets fired by Israeli forces, since the beginning of the clashes days ago.
At a press conference, Netanyahu gave what the papers called the ‘Mothers’ speech,’ assuring Israeli (Jewish) moms that their concerns for their families’ safety were legitimate and that terror would be defeated. Netanyahu called for a broad unity government, which Opposition leader, Isaac Herzog rejected saying the country needed a prime minister not a PR machine and that Netanyahu should “give back the keys” because he has lost control. (Maariv)
Right-wing protesters marched down Jerusalem streets Thursday night, searching for Arabs to attack and chanting ‘Death to Arabs' and and clashing with police. Hundreds of members from the right-wing extremist Lehava group and from La Familia, the radical Beitar Jerusalem soccer team fan club, marched asking passers-by if they were Arab or not. Police prevented them from entering a Palestinian neighborhood. After the stabbing attack in Afula, Jewish residents of the city attacked an Arab citizen and a policeman protected him with his body, Maariv reported. Other Jewish residents stoned passing cars of Arab citizens. In the northern West Bank, Israeli settlers assaulted the Palestinian Authority Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Alam Moussa, smashing his car windows during the attack, Maan reported.
Many Israeli civilians are now considering arming themselves. Nir Barkat, the mayor of Jerusalem, called on civilians carry weapons in the wake of terror attacks. MK Tzipi Livni said that would lead to anarchy and showed that the government has lost control. One sporting goods franchise CEO told Yedioth, “In the last few days, Israelis purchased hundreds of gas spray cans and 75% of the purchases were in the Jerusalem area.” Sporting goods stores say there is a rise of 400-500% in the sales of items such as pepper spray, tear gas, clubs, electric shockers, plastic handcuffs, brass knuckles and distress whistles.
The IDF is preparing today for a Palestinian 'Day of Rage' today with thousands of troops deployed along roads and flashpoints, while IDF officers and Palestinian security apparatuses coordinated their response. In the Old City, the police set up metal detectors to try to prevent stabbings. Maan reported that the unprecedented blanket ban prohibiting Palestinians from entering the Old City continues since Saturday, with an exception to those who live within the site. Jerusalem high schools remained shut in protest of the lack of funds to pay for security guards to stay past 1:30PM.
The police are attempting to suppress rallies among Israeli Arabs. Buses transporting participants in a protest rally against Israeli policies at the Temple Mount and aggression toward Palestinians. Police used stun grenades to break up the rally shortly after it started, lightly wounding several people, and arrested some of the youth organizers, who organized another rally in Nazareth for today.
Netanyahu said he will take aggressive measures against the Islamic Movement, blaming it for incitement in Israel and for saying that Israel was trying to change the status quo at the Temple Mount, which Netanyahu said it was not. The head of the northern branch of the Islamic movement, Raed Salah, responded saying that Netanyahu was to blame for the recent violence. Arab MK Ahmed Tibi also said that Netanyahu and the Israeli government were causing the violence. “Their conduct incites Palestinians, not the Islamic Movement. This includes shooting Palestinian youths and entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” said Tibi.
Despite Netanyahu's claims otherwise, top Maariv commentator Ben Caspit wrote that the main reason for the violence is the Palestinian belief that Israel intends to create hours for Jews to pray and hours for Muslims to pray at the Temple Mount, thereby changing the status quo, according to which Jews cannot pray on the Temple Mount. [Note: According to classic Orthodox Judaism, Jews are prohibited from walking on the Temple Mount. Right-wing nationalist religious Jews have begun trying to change that in recent years. - OH] Caspit wrote that allowing right-wing nationalist MKs and ministers to visit the Temple Mount has not helped allay Palestinian fears.
After right-wing politicians complained that Netanyahu only banned Jewish politicians from entering the Temple Mount, Netanyahu ‘flip-flopped’ and prohibited Muslim politicians, as well. But Joint List Arab MK Jamal Zahalka tried to enter anyway and was restricted. A number of Arab MKs have announced they will visit the Temple Mount/Harram al-Sharif together on Sunday.
