APN's daily news review from Israel
Tuesday November 10, 2015

Quote of the day:
"What kind of love for a child is it when he is sent to raid a Palestinian’s bedroom in some miserable refugee camp? Or when he’s sent to guard settlers who are taking over Palestinian olive groves? And what kind of love for a child is it when a settler mother forces her children to live in a hostile environment? And what about the love, which is the mother of all loves, of a Jewish mother who settles in the heart of Hebron?"
--Haaretz commentator Oudeh Bisharat responds to Jewish accusations that Palestinians educate their children to hatred and to reverence for death.

Breaking News:
Two Jerusalem attacks within half an hour:
A 12-year-old and a 13-year-old attack an Israeli security guard with a knife at the light rail in Pisgat Ze'ev; guard moderately wounded, one perpetrator shot, both were caught. Attempted stabbing at Damascus Gate is foiled. Sources in East Jerusalem said the light rail stabbing was the direct result of a video of 13-year-old Ahmed Manasra being interrogated by Israeli police being leaked to Palestinian media outlets.

Commentary/Analysis:
When It Comes to Obama and Israel, Military Aid Is One Thing, Disagreements Are Another (Amos Harel, Haaretz+) Analysis | The U.S. president keeps his political differences with Netanyahu apart from the defense agreements the two countries sign every 10 years.
Protocol Meeting: Obama and Netanyahu achieved what they wanted from the conversation between them (Shlomo Shamir, Maariv) The meeting between the Prime Minister and the US President was not big news because the results were agreed upon in advance. Netanyahu left contented with his military aid package, Obama has again demonstrated his sincere concern for Israel's security.
US Jewry's important mission (Eytan Gilboa, Yedioth/Ynet) In light of their loyalty to the Democrats, America's Jews are the only ones who can mediate and rebuild the bridges between Israel and the Democratic Party and help renew bipartisan support.
After Seven Years, Netanyahu Discovers the United States (Barak Ravid, Haaretz+) When PM spoke after his meeting with Barack Obama, it was hard to believe that he is the same man that up until a few weeks ago refused any dialogue with the U.S. administration and branded Obama as a bitter enemy.
Palestinians Don’t Feel They Have Anything to Lose (Samuel Heilman, Haaretz+) Why have so many young Palestinians decided that near certain death is preferable than their current existence under occupation? It’s a question of relative deprivation.
The Jewish Mother and the Palestinian Wild Animals (Odeh Bisharat, Haaretz+) What kind of love for a child is it when he is sent to guard a checkpoint or to raid a Palestinian’s bedroom in some miserable refugee camp?
A Palestinian refugee's open letter to all Israelis (Israa Thiab, +972mag) I know your fear is very real to you, even if it makes little sense to me. I know you see my desire to return to the land of my parents as an attack on your very existence. I wish our rights weren’t framed in zero-sum terms.
We, the Sheeple of Israel (Yitzhak Laor, Haaretz+) The Israeli passivity disappears only when the possibility of a mob beating arises. Give the herd a weak enemy and the sheep becomes a biting dog.
Quality will defeat the boycotts (Eli Hazan, Israel Hayom) Globalization may have generated challenges for our image, but it also allows us to highlight the greatest Israeli qualities.
First Peace Effort What Can We Learn From Count Folke Bernadotte and 1948? (Sven-Eric Söder, Haaretz+) Bernadotte’s important contribution to peace and security and his tireless humanitarian commitment deserve respect. We can learn from both his achievements and his mistakes as we continue the quest for a peaceful solution.
The Occupation Makes Israelis Stupid (Bradley Burston, Haaretz+) It is the settlement enterprise which runs the occupation. And it is the occupation which now runs Israel.
What Netanyahu can easily offer Obama on Gaza (Amir Rotem, +972mag) Three ‘gestures’ Israel can easily make that will radically improve the lives of at least thousands of Palestinians — all without compromising one inch on its own security concerns.
Act now: The greatest threat to Israel is continuing the status quo (S. Daniel Abraham, Haaretz+) If it retains the West Bank, Israel can be Jewish, but no longer democratic. Or, it can be democratic, but no longer Jewish. For those who love Israel, time is running out.
