A large contingent of Israeli ground forces entered the Gaza Strip Thursday night for the first time since Operation Protective Edge began 10 days ago, making the top story in today's Hebrew newspapers.

The incursion is said to be limited and focus on locating and destroying tunnels. Only Haaretz quoted Palestinian in Gaza who reported on heavy IDF artillery fire throughout the entire Gaza Strip. One Gaza resident said, “They’re firing from every direction, every thing here is shaking.”

Hamas said the ground operation was "a dangerous, costly step" and that the "occupation will pay heavy price." Israel said the invasion came after the failure of the Egyptian ceasefire attempt and the infiltration of militants into Israel. (The papers did not go into the details about how Hamas had not been consulted in the preparation of the ceasefire document, which was prepared after consulting with Israeli Prime Minister Binaymin Netanyahu, which did not answer any of Hamas' demands for the civilian population.) The papers said that the straw that broke the government's back was when 13 Palestinian militants were found climbing out of a tunnel on the Israeli side of the Gaza-Israel fence early Thursday morning. Israel says it believes that they intended to kill civilians. Ynet posted videos that Hamas aired of a wide tunnel through which it could carry out an attack and a video the IDF aired of Israeli ground forces entering the Gaza Strip. The government security-cabinet will convene today to discuss whether to expand the ground incursion.

In Egypt Thursday morning, hours before the incursion, the Palestinian Authority was discussing a truce proposal with Egyptians and Israelis in Cairo, but no Hamas delegation went to Egypt. Hamas said its demands for an end to the siege on Gaza must be met. Hours later, Egypt blamed Hamas for the deaths of Palestinians saying it should have accepted the original draft.

In recent days, Hebrew papers had begun to report more details about the deaths and suffering on the Palestinian side, (even Israel Hayom ran an article describing the 'grim atmosphere' in Gaza!). That ended today with the ground invasion and the focus on the safety of Israeli soldiers. The number of Palestinian dead did not even make it into most of the papers. Hence, the killing of another seven children in Gaza by Israeli airstrikes was ignored in print. Haaretz has an excellent review of live updates of Day 10 of Operation Protective Edge without paywall.
