Quote of the day:
“They told me during questioning that I had come to hurt soldiers and I said, ‘What are you talking about? I live among you'...I want them to think next time before they shoot."
--Arab-Israeli citizen, Firas al-Halaq, said after Israeli police shot him when he crashed at a military checkpoint and arrested him, accusing him of making a car-ramming attack against soldiers and of holding a knife. The police later dropped the charges and set him free without explanation. Al-Halaq maintained all along that there was no knife and it was a road accident that occurred when he was 'wasted.'*

PeaceCast: Annexation or Peace?

An edited recording of a panel that APN hosted on Capitol Hill on 10/26/19, featuring two representatives of our Israeli sister organization, Peace Now (Shalom Achshav), Israel’s peace movement.

Peace Now’s Shaqued Morag and Brian Reeves spoke about the danger to Israel that West Bank annexation poses – both the de-facto annexation that is being advanced every day on the ground in the West Bank and the de-jure annexation that Israel’s right-wing government is vowing to advance.

Their talk was a window into the current agenda and the emphases of Israel’s peace movement, as well as the challenges that the Israeli peace camp faces.

You Must Be Kidding #1:
The IDF sentenced an Israeli soldier, who admitted that he had fired his weapon without his commanders' permission toward Othman Rami Halas, a 16-year-old Palestinian boy at the Gaza border fence on July 13, to 30 days of the military equivalent of community service.**

You Must Be Kidding #2:
The IDF said the soldier was not tried for killing the boy because there was no proof that the soldier's action caused the boy’s death. That is despite the fact that the IDF tried the soldier for shooting specifically at Othman Rami Halas and a video shows the boy trying to climb the border fence and then falling to the ground. He was shot in the torso and his death was declared shortly afterward in the field.**

Quote of the day:
"A prime minister has two assets: the law that gives him his high standing and the trust that the public holds in him. The newspaper owner has two assets: the readers' confidence and the professional resilience of the journalists who work at his newspaper. The recordings from the Netanyahu-Mozes talks, some of which (journalist) Raviv Drucker aired last night on Channel 13, collapse the basis for the trust that both of these people stand on."
--Top Yedioth political commentator Nahum Barnea writes about the recording of his publisher and his prime minister.*
